HERITAGE

The Copper Coast region has retained many historic buildings dating back to settlement and copper mining of the mid 1800's, which enhances the areas character and appeal as valued by residents and of interest of tourists and holidaymakers who contribute to the region's economy.

The Council is committed to encouraging the conservation of the Cornish heritage and its historic local limestone buildings. A total of 25 places have been inclulded as State Heritage Places in Council's Development Plan.

Local and State Heritage listed properties are identified on the Heritage Overlay Map CoCo/1 in the Copper Coast Development Plan.

Development approval is required for any works to State and Local Heritage Places detailed below:

  • State Heritage Places - the demolition, removal, conversion, alteration or external painting of, or addition to, the place, or any other work that materially affect the heritage value of the place.

  • Local Heritage Places - the demolition, removal, conversion, alteration or external painting of, or addition to, the place or any other work (not including internal painting but including, in the case of a tree, any tree damaging activity) that could materially affect the heritage value of the place.

The external painting of a Local Heritage Place will not require development approval if:

  • The painting involves the repainting of an existing painted surface in the same or similar colours and so as to provide the same or similar texture, finish and effect or where the painting does not materially affect the heritage value of the place.

  • If you are unsure if the painting will materially affect the heritage value of the place, please discuss with Council Planning Staff.
